I always feel so honored to be there for the “before” and “after”. Aside from getting beautiful images at a wonderful time in your life, the maternity session gives us (my clients and I) a chance to get to know each other better. I think that’s important for when I come to photograph your newborn. We spend time together, getting to know one another, usually share a few laughs, sometimes tears (mostly mine), and that shows in the newborn session images, particularly those with the mama and daddie.

I prefer to book maternity sessions for approximately 32-34 weeks, earlier for multiples, and newborn sessions are best when done within the first two weeks. I always try and leave room in my schedule for newborns, but with the holiday season almost upon us, the dates available for fall are becoming very scarce.

Right now I’m also looking to explore the possibility of offering birth photography. Documenting, in the style of a photojournalist, the time leading up to, during and immediately following the birth of your baby. How sweet to see the obvious emotional connection between daddie and his brand new baby!

When you book a newborn session, you receive a complimentary maternity mini session, and this mama, like many before her, was hesitant about doing the maternity session. Sadly, it’s true that hardly any expectant mama feels as beautiful as they look.

I explained that, worse case scenario, we spend a fun half hour together (yes, fun) and call it a day. I asked her to trust me, to understand my belief that regrets are for the things you never try, and thankfully, she did!

I hope she can now agree, this was certainly worth the time and effort. I got so many great images and here are some to tide them over until their gallery is ready (soon).

One thing is for certain, this baby is going to be one gorgeous kid, and with eyes to die for!

I love this next image. A blue sky overhead, green crunchy grass underfoot, a warm shining sun and a sweet young couple plus one. That’s a great recipe!

I also met their handsome dog, and we spent a few minutes together before the session while his mommie and daddie were getting ready. He’s a big guy, but he’s a complete marshmallow. Of course it wasn’t long before he was totally bored with me and my camera stuck in his face, but I just had to show you his gorgeous eyes too!

With a nine week old, you just don’t know if you’ll be able to get any of the sleepy baby poses, but our patience (and sweat) paid off, mama!

It was truly a pleasure meeting and photographing your children.

I also love the little notes the kids share in school. I remember exchanging them when I was a child, and now I love it when it’s that time of year and my kids are selecting their “theme” and writing out their cards. Then when they bring home all the cards they get from their friends, it warms my heart. I’ve always loved putting together the little goodie bags for their classmates too. We did that again last night in preparation for their school Valentine parties today. With my kids growing so fast, right before my eyes, these are traditions I don’t want to let go of just yet.

Here are a couple more of my favorites. Two of the sweetest and silliest people in my life, my kids.

It gives me great pleasure to know that I can make images that do that for other people too!

Last year, one of my favorite Valentine mini sessions was of an expectant mom and her adorable little boy. The portraits were a surprise for her husband, his daddy. They were playful and fun, and I had a great time shooting them.

I’ve used some of the images from that session to show off more of my beautiful Valentine cards that are available to purchase with your mini session images.

Another favorite Valentine session was of a group of extended family – 3 families separate, but together. It was so much fun to see them all in the spirit of the holiday, wearing red, wearing heart motifs, enjoying the gathering. It was a great start to a fun family tradition!
