Sometimes, with all the excitement surrounding a newborn, we might forget that a first baby means there is probably plenty of “new” to go around. There may be a new mama, a new daddy, sometimes new grandparents, aunts, uncles and siblings – so much newness to be celebrated!

This little baby girl is a first for this sweet family, making her mama and her daddy, “new” too!

Just love all the folds and rolls, and something else that amazed me during the shoot. This tiny little one put her index finger into her mouth and was sucking on it for a long time! She did it herself! I wish you could hear the sound. She was making a meal out of her tiny finger! I was holding her at the time and was in awe. So much so that I didn’t even think of handing her off to her mama and grabbing my camera! Her mama was not surprised by this talent though; apparently, she did the same thing when she was a newborn! Who knew something like that could run in the family??? :)

I hope all of the mamas out there, new and seasoned, enjoyed a wonderful first Mother’s Day! Before you know it, we’ll be celebrating all the daddies!

equal time for the boys {newborn session}

Would not want to be accused of favoritism. I love to photograph all newborn babies, girls and boys alike! Again, to give you an idea of the variety of images that might come from a newborn session, here is another yummie one. This time, all boy. At 12 days new, he was definitely ready for his close up!

Each newborn session yields different types of images. There is no formula. It is definitely not scripted. On the contrary, with a newborn session, for me at least, I go in thinking I am going to do this, that and the other, and as my clients can surely attest, some things will go as planned, and others do not. :) That’s life.

I think though that you can understand more about the session itself if I showed you a bunch of images that came out of a recent newborn session. Not an entire gallery, but a good representation of one.

More than anything, through my images, my goal is to provide each family with beautifully captured, lasting memories of the sheer miracle of it all. Oh, and of course have fun doing it!

This little one was pure yum, and her wonderful family is oh-so-sweet as well.

double cake smash fun

The only thing more delicious than a one year old cake smash session, is a cake smash session for two (twin) one year olds! The reaction to having cake for the first time, without any rules or restrictions, is priceless!

I cannot believe these two cuties turned one last month. It seems like just yesterday I was taking their newborn pictures!

Here are their adorable images in my 20×20″ Cake Smash Storyboard. (I’ve smudged the names to keep them private.)

These little guys were so funny. You might think they would dive in up to their elbows, but they were a little surprised to find such yummy treats placed down right in front of them. It took a while for them to understand that it was OK to enjoy! Of course once they did, they owned it!

This client’s order just arrived and, as is typically the case, the actual mounted print of the storyboard is so much better in person! I cannot wait for it to be framed and up on their wall. You would think they were my twins! :)

I photographed this cute little guy today, and he was nearly edible! At 12 days new, he gave me great awake shots and also slept, well, like a baby! :)

Could not resist popping this image up for his mama and daddie, both of whom lacked a decent night’s sleep and were real troupers today. Rest assured (sorry for the shameless pun), there are so many wonderful images to come!

happy new year!

It is a brand new year and I am starting it with a renewed commitment to pay this blog some attention. No guarantees, mind you, and I did say “some” attention, not “all” of my attention! I will be backing up a bit to show you some of the beautiful families I have had the great privilege of photographing over the past few months. The holiday season was very busy, very rewarding, and physically and emotionally exhausting! In other words, it was great! :)

I am looking forward to introducing new products, and I have many new ideas and plans I hope to implement in the coming year as well. Here is a little sneak peek.

Frames
I had unofficially added a beautiful frame line to my boutique product selection in the fall and I am just now adding another line about which I am equally thrilled. Both frame lines are fresh, fun and different, and available in so many fantastic styles, colors, and combinations. There is something for everyone! My sample order has been placed, and I am anxiously awaiting the arrival of my new frames! I had searched for quite some time for just the right products that I believe truly compliment my work: I am so excited to have finally found them, and am now able to offer them to my clients! I will make a more official announcement soon, but if you are interested in frames for any of your session images, please let me know. The few clients that saw samples during the holiday season are now (or have plans to soon be) the happy owners of their own gorgeous framed prints! Myself included! :)

Mini Sessions
A successful format during the holiday season, I plan on offering more mini session opportunities during the year. Mini sessions are great for baby’s first year (4 months, when sitting up on their own, 1 year), milestone occasions such as the start of school, holidays, Mommy & Me, Daddy & Me, birthdays, an engagement session, bridal portraits, head shots, etc. Mini sessions are 20-30 minute sessions for up to 3 people, and not for babies under 4 months. Dates, offer details, and restrictions to be announced.

Snap Savvy Photography Workshop
As some of you already know, I have been teaching digital photography classes to elementary school age children for the past 3 years through our local school district’s creative arts program. Now, Johanna Sophia Photography will be hosting group workshops for moms and dads that want to learn how to take better photographs of their kids. This is an introduction to photography that will cover the basic principles of digital photography in a simple, straight forward manner. There will be many tips and tricks on how to improve your photography using the camera you already own. Private, group classes and one-on-one classes will also be available for those that have scheduling conflicts with the workshop dates, or for those who just prefer a more personalized experience. I love to share my love for photography and cannot wait to get started! The workshop particulars are being finalized and I will be announcing the dates and details shortly.

And to celebrate the beginning of a new year, an image of a new little life that arrived mid-fall. What a sweet and adorable, yummy little baby girl!

I will post more images from her newborn session tomorrow.
